Respiratory
therapists treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants
whose lungs are not fully developed, to elderly people whose lungs are
diseased. The therapist's role in the hospital includes (but is not
limited to) oxygen administration, therapeutic breathing treatments,
administering specialty medications, chest/lung physical therapy, testing
breathing mechanics, and arterial blood gas analysis. The therapist plays
a crucial role in the set-up and maintenance of delicate life support
equipment (ventilators). Additionally, the respiratory care practitioner
must respond to all "codes" in the hospital, as they are a major component
of the CPR team. The mission of the Respiratory Care Technology Program is to provide didactic, laboratory, and clinical experiences that will enable graduates of the program to demonstrate the technical, professional and analytical skills needed to positively impact the surrounding communities through administration of respiratory modalities. During the course of study, each student will be taught the fundamentals of pulmonary medicine and applications that are specific to respiratory care. Each modality is taught in the lab/classroom setting and is then performed in the hospital on patients under direct supervision. Medical direction is provided by a medical doctor with a specialty in Pulmonary Medicine. It is important that respiratory care practitioners be sensitive to patients’ needs. They must pay attention to detail, follow instructions and work as an integral part of the healthcare team. Operating complicated respiratory care equipment requires mechanical ability and manual dexterity. Upon graduation, the student is eligible to take the Respiratory Care Entry Level Exam administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care to be followed by the Registry Exam. OCtech’s Respiratory Care program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, 1248 Harwood Rd., Bedford, TX 76021-4244; telephone: 817-283-2835; fax: 817-354-8519. Admission to the Respiratory Care Technology program is based upon successful completion of placement tests and proof of high school diploma or GED. The Admissions Office will provide specific program information and additional admission requirements. Classes begin each fall. Special Note: It is strongly urged that all prospective students take at least one course in chemistry, two years of algebra and one course in biology. Proof of current CPR certification before entering RES clinical education centers is required. Out of town travel will be required for selected clinical experiences and seminars. Students will be required to have a Criminal Background Check as part of the admissions process. A minimum grade of “C” is required in all related courses.
